The earth was unformed and void, darkness was on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the water.
Genesis 1:2
In the first chapter of Genesis, we learn that everything was formless, and God proceeds to bring structure by forming boundaries, creating forms and types of everything we have come to know.
Humans, being created in the likeness of God, have the same abilities too, though on a lesser level. We are endowed with the ability and responsibility of creating in the same way – to create order out of what is formless and chaotic in our lives.
“Look, the people are united, they all have a single language, and see what they’re starting to do! At this rate, nothing they set out to accomplish will be impossible for them!”
Genesis 11:6
Even though the above seems to hint that the people who built the tower of babel had undesirable intentions, we can observe that civilisations are formed when we work hand in hand to form things.
The ability to bring order out of chaos is one way to judge our own successes in our realms of influence.
Finding purpose out of what seems to be pointless and meaningless is our role in life too.
Note down a few things that you really dislike working on (in your home, in your work, in your community) – these are probably your personal chaos. And when you decide to root them with a purpose, formulate solutions and act on them step by step like how God did, you start to create something out of what is formless.
Think about this: ancient Jewish wisdom could have simply described God creating everything in an instance. Instead, it teaches us that each step of creation prepares for the next step. I believe this gives us a blueprint to overcoming our personal chaos in our daily lives.
How does the fact that you are created like God to be able to bring order out of chaos make you feel?
Hopefully it makes you feel powerful! ✨
