“Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.””
Luke 10:42 NIV
At one end of the house, Martha had chosen to physically prepare the food and rooms for Jesus and His disciples, so that they could be comfortable at their house.
This was what Martha considered to be the better way of pleasing Jesus.
At the other end, we have Mary, who had quietly chosen to sit by Jesus’s feet, listening to Him.
This was what Mary had considered to be the better way of pleasing Jesus.
The reproach for Martha was not that she should have been sitting and listening like Mary. But that Martha had tried to change Mary’s chosen way of pleasing Jesus.
Jesus wanted to show Martha that both Mary and herself had chosen what each of them wanted to do to please Jesus. And both ways were equally acceptable.
And since each sister had chosen what each of them considered to be the better way, they should stick to their individual decision and not try to influence the other to change her mind.
In fact, both Mary and Martha, (yes, even Martha!), pleased the Lord with their individual choices.
If things happened the other way, ie. Mary had requested Jesus to get Martha to come sit and listen to Jesus, wouldn’t He have spoken up for Martha too? Because Martha’s motive was to please the Lord too.
We all have “Mary” and “Martha” within ourselves, always debating within us.
When you have chosen what you want to do, stick to your decision!
