Although Esau and Jacob were twins, they could not have been more different.
Esau had a carefree attitude – which was more like a “Care Less” attitude.
A person with a “Care Less” attitude is simple minded and foolish. Such an attitude will surely lead to regrets.
“And when Esau was forty years old he took as wife Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35And they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.”
Genesis 26:34-35
Esau had a “Care Less” attitude towards his birthright as the firstborn son and even so for his marriage.
Hittites were known to be polytheistic – worshippers of many deities. Yet, Esau disregarded how fiercely monotheistic his parents were towards their God, and married not just one but two Hittite women!
The trials and tribulations of being a refugee in hostile Gerar – Isaac had to hide Rebekah’s identity as his wife and overcome the jealousy of the locals when they stopped up his wells – was nothing compared to the bitterness that his son caused him when he married two Hittite women.
Upon losing his blessings as the firstborn son, Esau suddenly became very un-“Care Less” – he cried and asked Isaac to bless him, but to no avail.
It was only when Jacob was told not to marry a Canaanite woman, that
“Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.”
Genesis 28:8-9 NIV
This truly shows how “Care Less” Esau was… surely he would have known how displeasing his Hittite wives were to his parents?
Suddenly, Esau tried not to be “Care Less” when he had lost the blessings of the firstborn son.
Let us learn from the mistakes of Esau. Guarding against the “Care Less” attitude, we should not have to lose much to realise what we truly care about.
